Incubus Master ~ Yamila Abraham
Yaoi Prose ~ 8 Part eBook

Quick Synopsis:

“Jinady was forced to be a sex slave to a tribe of winged incubi for a year when he’s rescued by the regal demon Figaru. Figaru brings Jinady to a settlement of mortals. Jinady learns that Figaru is the king of this settlement, and that he’s been looking for a mate. Figaru’s adoring subjects start to match-make the two. Jinady finds himself falling for the noble demon king. He senses his feelings are being reciprocated. Then Jinady discovers Figaru’s former love interest Rowan is locked in a dark cabin with a magical ‘blood chain’ connecting his throat to a wall. Several demon allies are rallying to help Rowan, including Scor, the demon Figaru almost beat to death. Jinady seeks the truth about what happened between Rowan and Figaru, while trying to resist the strong seductive lure of the demon king.”  ~From the Yaoi Prose website

Plot:

What can I say? I love this plot. It’s always a good sign when you find yourself eagerly awaiting the next release. At no point in time did I find myself predicting where the story was going or thinking I already knew the ending. There are a lot of original elements to the story and I found it to be very engaging throughout. The synopsis provided for the story doesn’t do the story justice in my opinion. I think Yamila does a good job of ‘going there’ when tough situations arise in the story; not every element is sunshine and unicorns but that’s what makes the story a little deeper than most we get.

Readability:

Normally when I discuss readability of a story I’m referring to the translation and the speech bubbles but since this is prose written in English, it’s going to pertain to the grammar, sentence structure and basic story writing elements. This is Yaoi Prose’s first release and I think it shows in some aspects. The writing in Part 1 is definitely the weakest but it fortunately begins to improve as the story goes on. I could see some readers potentially being turned off if only reading Part 1 but I do recommend giving the entire story a try. I think where it runs into problems is with the author doing a lot of telling of the story instead of showing, which is something any past student of a writing course will know is drilled into them over and over. Don’t tell me what’s happening, show me with your words so I can envision the story and become engrossed in it.

Also, I found some of the story to be choppy due to many short sentences instead using punctuation to provide for longer elements to be expressed. Another thing I found myself noticing is the overstating of character quirks, like lip chewing or picking at their cuticles. It’s important to have these elements in a story to make the character more human and realistic but there comes a point when it’s too much and starts to detract from the story.

Characters:

Jinady, a human, is the main character the story follows. From the illustrations, he looks like your typical feminine long haired bishie and in some aspects he is but what I liked most about him is how the author chose to go beyond the typical bishie mold. Jinady not only is a bit of a slut throughout the story with his partner swapping but he also switches up once becoming the seme. I think it’s all his sexual risk taking that makes some of the sex scenes so steamy.

Figaru is Jinady’s main love interest although not his only one. He’s a demon who’s looking for love after losing his wife and although there are plenty of potential suitors, he knows he must be careful with who he partners with. Don’t feel sorry for Figaru when Jinady gets slutty, he’s getting his needs met as well!

There are plenty of other characters to keep the story interesting including a shape shifting demon named Gor, a slightly crazy transvestite named Leatha, spoiled brat and not to be trusted Rowan and our poor Vandrel, who is just too love sick over Leatha to make any good decisions.

Illustrations:

Each ‘part’ has a color illustration included with it, which is a nice change from the typical black and white illustrations we get with yaoi novels. I think the quality of them is alright but the coloring on some needed some work. I do believe there was at least one or more later in the story colored by Kosen and I noticed the color seemed improved. Most of the illustrations are graphic with zero censorship so if you don’t like to see your seme/uke cocks in living color, this may not be a benefit. If that appeals to you, then you’re in luck! There’s plenty to be seen!

Sexual Content:

As I mentioned above, you get to see the sexual content illustrated and in color. Each part provides at least one sex scene and they are usually quite graphic and long. There are a lot of different partners written about so you definitely get some variety. I found the sex scenes written about Jinady to be the most appealing, probably because he’s the one we get to know the best (and is the most slutty!). The writing at times does detract a bit from the sex scenes and one of them early on didn’t really do it for me, moreso due to one of the characters involved but I saw improvement with each subsequent scene.

Final Thoughts:

As a first release for Yaoi Prose, there is room for improvement in future releases when it comes to the writing of prose versus manga with this author. That being said, I really loved this story and can’t wait to read the follow up release Incubus Master: Captured. I find the storyline of Incubus Master to be engaging, the sex is plentiful and steamy and it keeps my interest piqued throughout!
