YAOI PUBLISHER/TITLE UPDATE: Kitty Media

Back on October 14th I posted a 'rumor' about Crimson Spell V3 based on some twitter dialogue between myself and Media Blasters, Kitty Media's parent company. Shortly after YaoiCon and again on Twitter it was brought to my attention by @Shelly_LR that Media Blaster's employee(s) had said they were shutting down their manga division and selling their licenses. I shot off an email to Donna Lopez, Media Blaster's Sales Department Manager asking for clarification of both their manga division as well as Crimson Spell. Here was her response:

Hi Jennifer,

Thank you for your inquiry.  Please be advised that the Yaoi division is not closing and will restart in 2011.  We are just trying to figure out a new way to handle our Yaoi division in 2011, which has not been confirmed.  Please feel free to follow up with me again in 2011. On another note we are planning on doing more Crimson Spell but [not] exactly sure of those plans yet.  We will make any announcements necessary once we determine what direction we are going in.  Thank you again for your inquiry and please feel free to contact me with any questions you may have.

Thank you,

Donna

Well, I for one love Kitty Media and their titles so I'm happy for any hope. They are only one of two publishers that publish hard yaoi so without them our options are limited and small. I'll be sure to follow up with them in 2011 and keep you posted. ;-)

UPDATE: And the plot thickens. I just had the following conversation on twitter with Sensei (Ayano Yamane) and it still sounds very up in the air:

Sensei: Do you say that the sequel of Media Blaster 'S" Crimson spell "will be published? RT  @: @

Sensei: There is no clear answer from Media Blaster 's to the publisher in Japan.

TYR: @ They said they are planning on publishing more but are unsure of the plans.

TYR: @ I think finances are the problem at this point.

Sensei: @ Thank you! I wish economy to improve early.

TYR: @ You are welcome and we hope so, too! :-)
UPDATE #2: ANN has added that Media Blasters has confirmed via Twitter that they will once again publish Gay's Anatomy: Episode Zero. Sweet!

I was only there for one day and was so damn busy that I didn’t have time to talk to any of the publishers. Well, there were only two but all the same. XD

  • I’m so happy to hear they aren’t closing the Yaoi division of their manga division. Though, the way that response is worded, it sounds like the rest of their manga division (minus the Yaoi section) may be closing. I have almost all their books. I’ve loved a lot of their choices for licenses and was looking forward to the next vol of Crimson Spell as well as the first release of a KASUGA Naoka title in English. They aren’t afraid to do the hard stuff, and I’m glad for that.

Do they do nonyaoi stuff? We were having this discussion on twitter.

Yeh, they do. They’ve done shounen, seinen, and shoujo. I think they even released a yuri title, but I’m not totally sure on that one.

Actually I think I misunderstood what you’re askig. Just to clarify – MediaBlasters has done shounen, seinen, and shoujo. Kitty (subsidiary) has done primarily yaoi and maybe a yuri title

Yeah, I think who I was talking to was thinking Kitty and I was thinking Media Blasters, which I thought did more stuff.
