Word of the Day: Tsundere/Yandere/Kuudere/Dandere

Tsundere: A Japanese character development process that describes a person who is initially cold and even hostile towards another person before gradually showing their warm side over time. The word is derived from the terms Tsun Tsun, meaning to turn away in disgust, and Dere Dere, meaning to become 'lovey dovey'. Originally found in Japanese bishojo games, the word is now part of the otaku moe phenomenon, reaching into other media such as maid cafes, anime, manga, novels, and even mass media. The term was made popular in the game Kimi ga Nozomu Eien.

EXAMPLE: Souichi Tatsumi from The Tyrant Falls in Love

Before: Hostile
After: Lovey Dovey
(and then immediately hostile) :D

Yandere: from the Japanese words yanderu, meaning to be sick, and deredere, which is defined as exhausted or lovestruck. A fictional character who fits the contrasting archetype of being loving, sweet and gentle, and able to suddenly switch to brutal, psychotic or deranged behavior.

TVTropes.com has an EXCELLENT description of yandere and it's quite amusing as well. I suggest giving it a read.

EXAMPLE: Fuuta Naruse from Cute Devil

Before: Loving, sweet, gentle
After: Brutal, psychotic, deranged

Dandere: is the silent type or the shy type who will be often told as an emotionless guy/girl, but will be able to show his/her heart with the right person if manage to open him/herself to him.

example: Satoru Toono from Bukiyo Na Silent (?) by Hinako Takanaga

  • these “word of the day” posts are really helpful. I always hear tsundere pop up in animes that I watch but I never knew what it meant and I’ve never even heard of the other three. thanks!
