Yay! So happy this one is such an improvement over Mr. Flower Bride. If you remember correctly, my review for “Bride” was not very flattering so I was concerned going into this one. Mr. Flower Groom actually started at the end of Mr. Flower Bride and even then it seemed like the story would be a bit better and it is. The first chapter of “Groom” ended on a bit of a sour note for our couple as Kouichirou, the seme and the bride *gasp!* pushes Ritsu, his childhood friend and now groom, too far during their first time together. This is right where Mr. Flower Groom picks up. What I really liked in this one is how slowly this story plays out. “Bride” was over and done in only four chapters and “Groom” covers six chapters if you count the one in the prior release. This difference really shows. It allows for these two to get to know each other better as spouses instead of just friends and it isn’t just “I love you!”… “I love you, too! Let’s do it!”

There are two other one chapter long stories, one for you fans of glasses, which made me chuckle, and another with a REALLY feminine uke, which I wasn’t a fan of. There’s also a short follow-up story to the main story located at the end as well as a lot of extra bit ‘n pieces about the mangaka as well as translation notes. Speaking of, Yen Press provides the original Japanese words for the sound effects and then includes the translation right under in parenthesis. They now only include the translation once instead of with each one (when it’s repeated) so the page isn’t as cluttered and this is much better. The translation itself was nice and I liked the translation notes at the end, which are needed since they are big on using honorifics throughout, which can get a bit confusing.

The illustrations are beautiful and I found myself really taking notice of some of the lovely facial expressions of the characters. Nicely done. Of course, our uke is a bit on the feminine side, which is a characteristic of Hoshino’s drawing style but I still love her style and find it attractive. I also love that the uke is the husband and started out with a take charge type attitude in the prior volume. Sexual content in some areas is a bit explicit but not crazy. I think they could have been done better. Her later work tends to be a bit more saucy than these scenes were.

Overall, I really enjoyed this one and am so happy at the direction it took. You can definitely see Lily Hoshino’s improvement shining through. If you did buy Mr. Flower Bride, you definitely want to get this one. If you didn’t, know that the very first chapter of Mr. Flower Groom is located in Mr. Flower Bride so you will be missing out on part of the story.

Chocolate Surprise is an anthology of eight unrelated smaller stories (nine in total but the first two are the same characters). Mix Chocolate and Mix Mix Chocolate are essentially the cover story and my favorites. The remaining stories are all varied and entertaining with varying degrees of explicitness (three are not explicit at all while the rest are). Since all the stories are different and there are so many, I won’t go into explaining each and every one. I’m not usually a fan of anthologies but I really did enjoy this one.

If you are familiar with Lily Hoshino then you are already well aware of her drawing style. I’m a fan and I do really enjoy it. For me, it is a breath of fresh air in a sea of stale art. It’s probably not for everyone since she definitely draws her boys more feminine than some would like but I don’t mind it at all. The style is so different that I can’t help but enjoy reading her various titles. I think her illustrations are very clean and a bit more polished than a lot of the stuff that is out there. If you’ve never seen her work, you should try at least one.

As I said earlier, this is pretty explicit. If you like details, this one definitely has them. Another difference with her illustrations is that she does draw in the pubic hair and I found that does appeal to me. With the characters having a feminine touch, seeing them naked hammers home that these are all males and not just young feminine boys. The sex scenes are pretty hot and not just a bunch of drawn sex panels that don’t draw you in and kick up the heat.

The translation and readability of the speech bubbles was just fine in this one so no worries there. Overall, for an anthology, I think this is a good one. The stories are varied, the sex is explicit and plenty and I think it will keep you entertained. If you are more for longer in depth stories, you probably won’t want this one.

So I just received my copy of Mr. Flower Bride by Lily Hoshino. I have read her previous work Love Quest, also by Yen Press so to me buying this one was a no brainer (or so I thought). Mr. Flower Bride is an earlier work of hers (2004) compared to Love Quest (2006) and I think it shows unfortunately. The plot is out there (not unusual for BL) and is the weakest part of this title. Weak plot isn’t anything new to BL but even I found myself wondering if this was all there was.

The premise of the main story is that Souda family tradition states if the eldest son becomes a father to his own son, his younger brothers must marry a male in order to prevent any disputes of family succession. Basically, by marrying a male, they can’t have any children so no squabbles with the eldest’s kid. Ok, I knew this going in and I still bought it so obviously, I knew the story would be “out there”. I guess for me where the weakness is is that with such a different story, there is no “shine”. We have the typically crying uke and irritable seme and there is really no conflict. The outcome is predictable and I think this is because the entire story is covered in four chapters (and a few pages at the end) leaving three other chapters for other stories. The mangaka also seems fully aware as she herself states “It’s the most embarrassing manga I’ve ever drawn” and “The stupider it is, the more fun it is to draw”.

There are three other stories included with Mr. Flower Bride. They are: Mr. Flower Groom (the intro to Yen Press’s next release by Lily Hoshino of the same name), Even if It Costs Me My Life, and If I Can See You Anytime. Mr. Flower Groom is the same family and same premise except the roles are reversed. The uke character is the groom and the seme character is the bride. Even If It Costs Me My Life is about a bodyguard protecting a younger high school student and If I Can See You Anytime is about a brothel where customers can act our their fantasies. This one doesn’t delve into that but it is the most explicit of the stories. The uke has long hair and is indistinguishable from a girl minus the no boobs.

Lily Hoshino has a unique drawing style and she loves to draw her characters with a feminine quality. I actually don’t mind it but know that some of the ukes could pass for girls if they had to. She also includes female characters in her stories to varying degrees of importance and they tend to be either scantily clad or showing more than they should. An interesting quirk. I’ve also noticed that she likes to throw in at least one story with explicit sex but it is never the main story (at least not in what I’ve read thus far). There is sex scattered throughout but not super explicit.

Yen Press is pretty new to publishing boys’ love. They include one double sided color insert with an illustration on one side and the table of contents on the other, a nice quality considering the economy. They also like to provide both the Japanese word for the sound affect and then the English translation along with it. For example, they will print “Biku” and then underneath in parenthesis type (Twitch). Not distracting in this one but it was a bit distracting in Love Quest. The printing quality is nice, the translation was well done and Ms. Hoshino’s illustrations are nicely done as well.

Overall, if this is your first Lily Hoshino work, I would say go get Love Quest because it is a better story. If you are familiar with her work and like it, then know the plot is pretty weak. Will I buy Mr. Flower Groom? Yes. It looks like it has the potential for being a little more interesting than this title.

Plot = C

Characters = B

Illustrations/Book Design = A-
