Part-Time Pets – Reno Amagi – Yaoi Manga Review

 

I didn’t have high hopes for this one when I picked it up. In fact, I thought I would read it quick, whip out a review and move on to the next one. Who knew I was going to love it so much? So cute… so funny… literally had me laughing out loud. The illustrations were hysterical and the mangaka’s sense of humor is awesome.

 

Part-Time Pets is an anthology of three stories that fall under the title name, a very short follow-up story to one of these stories and then a separate two-part story called Koimiko: Love Shrine. Usually with an anthology you find one or two stories you like and the rest are just filler stories but I loved all of these. The Part-Time Pets stories had a rabbit/human, a cat/human and a dog/human and how the mangaka incorporated the animal mannerisms into these characters is what made it so damn funny. The bunny litter box with the rabbit poo in it when he’s a human with bunny ears made me laugh out loud (it’s not gross, I swear). The other story (Koimiko) does not involve any animal/human hybrids but I really enjoyed it a lot. I would say it had the best plot and I found when I finished the first part of the story, I was really interested in knowing how it would end. The pet stories were all really cute and funny but the plots were basically just yaoi fluff.

 

I loved the illustrations in this book. They really added to the humor throughout and her attention to detail with the items showing in the background relating to each animal is what made this so much better. The translation and speech bubbles were fine and there *may* have been one time that I had to double-check just who was saying what but it wasn’t anything major. As far as sexual content, this isn’t explicit. There is sex in it but it’s pretty tame. Koimiko and the side story are probably the most explicit but all you see is the back and top of the butt.

 

Although this isn’t an explicit title, it really did surprise me at how much I liked it. If you want something really fun, cute and at times laugh out loud funny, I would highly recommend picking this one up. I really did enjoy it.
